What Is La Bufadora? Inside Ensenada's Legendary Marine Geyser

La Bufadora sits on the tip of the Punta Banda Peninsula, about 17 miles south of downtown Ensenada, where the Pacific Ocean meets a rugged wall of coastal cliffs. It’s often called a marine geyser, but unlike geothermal geysers, its power comes entirely from the sea.

As waves roll into a partially submerged sea cave, they trap a rush of air and pressurized water. When each wave recedes, that trapped air has nowhere to go but up — blasting a spray of seawater as high as 100 feet into the sky with a thunderous roar that gives the site its name (bufadora translates to “the snorter” in Spanish). It’s regarded as the second-largest blowhole of its kind on the planet, and local legend says the spout is really a whale calf, once trapped in the rocks, still calling out to its pod.
